Common Browser Compatibility Concerns Defined
Web Browser Basics
Web browsers are basically translators that speak the language of HTML. Compatibility issues arise when your website uses HTML language a browser does not recognize, causing display errors as the browser simply skips that portion of the code. As the Rosemont Review case study already demonstrated, paying attention to browser compatibility during the medical website design phase will enhance a visitor’s virtual experience and lead to further interaction with your aesthetic practice.
Identifying Common Compatibility Issues
While you cannot control the type of browser your patients use to access your site, there are several things you can do to avoid the common compatibility issues. Paying service to a wide range of web browsers may be a headache during website development, but it will save time and frustration for both you and your patients in the future. The following is a list of the most common concerns to consider:
- Different Browsers: as cited in the case study, over 20 browsers were used to access our clients’ websites
- Different Browser versions: users don’t always upgrade to the latest edition of a browser
- Cutting-edge features: the newest design features may disrupt the performance of older browser versions
- Different computer types: the same browser may perform differently depending on the type of computer used
- Font Size: most browsers allow users to adjust font size, which can disrupt page layout and appearance
- Screen Size and resolution: differences in either may cause distortions and force users to scroll side to side
Most Important Compatibility Concern for Mobile Users
While many of these common concerns can be addressed by running any number of reports and tests to ensure compatibility across the board, your mobile users present another possible issue. Just as you cannot predict which type of browser your patients will use, there is no way to determine how they will access your website from a mobile device.
Above all else, the most important feature to include on your website for your mobile users is a clickable phone number. Whether a current patient needs to reschedule, or a potential patient would like to schedule a consultation, including a clickable phone number on your website will allow them to reach your office despite the compatibility issues they may encounter.
