HIPPA & Social Media Dos and Don’ts
Rosemont Media CEO Keith Humes participated in a Social Marketing and Beyond panel for plastic surgeons this past weekend at the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium. During the roundtable discussion, Humes offered some sound advice concerning the management of social media communities such as Facebook. Below is a list any aesthetic healthcare practice should consider before implementing social media into their daily routine.
Social Media Dos for Plastic Surgeons
- Be a leader in your social media community
- Consult legal counsel to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations
- Develop and maintain a constant presence
- Include full disclosure verbiage in patient consent forms for video and photo galleries
- Incorporate Social Media Best Practices into patient privacy disclaimer
- Review HIPPA guidelines with all employees and encourage appropriate participation
Social Media Don’ts for Plastic Surgeons
- Do not discuss medical history or conditions
- Do not friend patients or interact anywhere other than Practice Page
- Do not post a photo or video without written patient consent
- Do not shy away from removing a potentially compromising post
